This response is all the way from Japan! And from an ordinary Japanese man living in a quite rural city!

Came across this article by a sheer twist of luck (better say, by the Invisible Hand of God!).

And, was completely touched and moved by the story. Had tears running on my cheeks as I continued to read it over and over again!

Was also attached to the ensuing "12 Comments, and noted the exciting exchange of comments among all critiquers.

Re: Meredith's Letter and God's Response--Surely do I believe that "God" responded to her! If not as a Real God (who can prove or disprove!), if not as a postal (female?) worker, there was Someone (or Something Higher) at the post ofice who/which took note of Meredith's letter addressed to:Dear God.

God, to me, is a state of mind. Every one of us human beings has got a Godlike Nature deep in our mind (or heart). That Nature may not be visible (and again who can say Invisible?) and can be "awakened" by an external thing of good conduct. This time, it was Meredith's letter and her picture in it!

Let's say Meredith will grow up believing in and appreciating the Power of Godlike Nature. It has always been so with me, at least, up to now.

God bless Meredith, Abbey, Ellie, and all other respectful contributors to this column. Thanks again to you all for your candor and integrity, as well as
your mutual great love!

I read this letter with great respect for mankind. How sad that we as adults must find it so important to prove to the world that they unfortunatlly went through a tragic childhood. Let go of it and move on! Let this little girl believe what she wishes to belive, who are we to even try to take a piece of this from her How Selfish! I am 50 years old and I still believe in Santa is that dishonest? I think not, if you believe in Mom and Dad you will always believe in Santa! Those of us who wish to believe will do so!

"Love is God".

Osho explains: "God is not love, love is God. The moment you say God is love you are simply saying that love is only an attribute of God. He is also wisdom, he is also compassion, he is also forgiveness, he can be millions of things besides love; love is only one of the attributes of God."

The postal worker would have had to go to the book shop to buy the book, then sit down and write that lovely note to the little girl.
She had used the most caring words to comfort the little girl and assure her that her dog was ok and in gods care.
wouldnt it be lovely if there were more people around like this postal worker, she has the biggest heart, and a person like that, must surely be filled with the love of god.
There for, yes, the letter was sent, through the love of god!
So, she wasn't dishonest at all really was she.
god bless the postal worker!

Dear Jonathan,

I believe that it was God who answered this little girl.. in this case, God is a USPS worker who received the letter that was addressed to him and answered it the way only God would, with love.

Hi Ellie... I certainly know that "Not everyone is of the belief that there is a “God in heaven taking care of things”...," as I am included in this group. But the fact that many of us might be of this opinion does not mean there was no dishonesty in the note.

While I too celebrate diversity, I find no reason not to seek understanding in the process of doing so. And, while understanding-sought is not always understanding-gained, it is in the endeavor to understand others that an appreciation for diversity is found.

If you don't see the problem that I do with the above story, that may certainly be considered simple perspective-diversity, which is clearly part of the contrast contributing to, as you well put it, "this wondrous world." Further, if you think it's okay to to be a little dishonest sometimes, say, with children--when we know it's just helping them through a difficult time...hey, that's understandable. I speak with no dogmatism when I express a personal concern about that sort of thing. I believe that two honest people can come to two different conclusions. But if we think it's okay to be a little dishonest sometimes...can we at least have the candor to admit it's a little dishonest?

The fact that ten witnesses can give ten different testimonies, does not mean the note written was "honest," unless you think there is a chance that the person who wrote that note indeed believes they are not someone who works at the USPS, but the personage who monitors comings and goings in heaven and who personally chooses parents for children in their pre-human existence.

Yes, if you think that individual might truly believe this, then I see your point.

Hi Jonathan....

Not everyone is of the belief that there is a "God in heaven taking care of things" - So then there would be no dishonesty here.

Deciding if someone is honest or dishonest is certainly not up to me. We are all unique with unique perspectives and beliefs. Each of those beliefs is right for that person but does not mean it is right for another.

I truthfully can not fully understand your opinion nor you mine as we are each unique beings. I do not want to make sure that you understand my opinion - as I celebrate the diversity of us all that makes up this wondrous world!

One accident on the corner - 10 people witness it and each writes their own accident report - Those reports read like there were 10 different accidents. Who is being honest? - they all are - they each gave their own account from their own personal perspective.

And I respect your opinion too, Ellie. But let's make sure you understood mine. I am also of the opinion that we are all connected to that great universal energy source, and that our efforts to help others who experience pain and sadness are admirable. But as I wrote...

"At the same time, I wince at the idea that someone pretended to be God–the God who is supposed to be in heaven taking care of things."

The woman did not write that note merely as a fellow human who was spiritually connected--but represented herself as the all-knowing creator of the universe, residing in heaven. While it is certainly good to 'go out of our way' and to "uplift," it is also good to be honest.

Hi Jonathan........

I respect your opinion...

Personally - I do not look at people and think "they were just people". I see the "God", "Universe", "Source", "Spirit" in all people. Anyone who goes out of there way to uplift another being is doing so while connected to the Source of us all.... At that moment they are filled with that power - in essence they are indeed - God. As the note said "I am wherever there is love"

So as I said in my conclusion of this story - I do believe this little girl received her answer from God....

Thanks for visiting and sharing your perspective...

I cautiously express a private opinion: I was torn by the story. First, I loved the picture of the little girl and dog--and the idea that some person took the time to assuage her sad feelings. At the same time, I wince at the idea that someone pretended to be God--the God who is supposed to be in heaven taking care of things.

I don't expect everyone to understand, but I was raised in an organization that I now recognize as a cult--and, in a sense, they did the same thing: pretended to speak for God--when they were just people. Of course the results of their actions were more far-reaching than those associated with this story, but I wonder how helpful it is in the long-run. I mean, how might this little girl feel when she later realizes that the person who wrote this note wasn't really God?

I hate it that my note might be denigrating a person who was just trying to do something very nice. But I thought I'd enter this as food for thought.
