Adversity – what do you think of when you say that word?

What do you feel when you say it?

I asked several people what thoughts come to mind when they hear that word.

• Problem
• Obstacle
• Trouble
• Bad Situation

OK – So we all agree we don’t consider this a happy word — When we hear it our thoughts turn to something negative…. to a feeling of powerlessness.

I hear some well meaning people say things like “Embrace Adversity” or “Overcome Adversity” – “Face Adversity” and some say “Allow Adversity”

We know our experiences are created from our vibrations — If I am putting my attention on adversity – aka bad situations – aka problems — The signal I am emitting is one of adversity — Do I really want to be calling this to me?

I’m not going to embrace, overcome, face or allow adversity – I’m going to make it disappear!

Re-frame Adversity

Some of you are already experiencing a job loss – maybe your house is in foreclosure. Maybe your business has slowed down and your expenses have risen.

I do understand these are not fun situations – I also understand how the Law of Attraction works…. By continuing to label these situations as bad, as adversity – you continue to hold them in your focus – which continues the merry go round of adversity.

That is the Law of Attraction at work - it always will bring to you the signal you are sending out. It is mirroring to you what you have your attention on. If your attention is on lack – you are then riding on the lack merry-go-round.

You need to take a step back… and make peace with the situation.

How?

First by realizing that complaining, being angry or worrying about it – will never, ever make the situation better! So simply state – “What is – IS” – I can’t change this situation but I can deliberately choose how I am going to react to it.

What ever has gone on is history – even if it just happened minutes ago. Trying to change something that has already happened is what makes us feel powerless – as it can not be done! Deciding to deliberately make peace with it and find the opportunity is where you re-frame it and gain your power back.

What possible opportunity could be found in the foreclosure of a house or the loss of a job?

That is your job – to find the opportunity…. Sometimes it is just simply stating – “This situation is frustrating for me — but I’m OK – my family is OK and somehow I have faith that this is all going to work out.”

There is relief in that statement – as you find relief – you give yourself more space for better feelings thoughts to come in. As you feel better you open the space for good things to come to you.

If you stay in the space of worry and anxiety – Law of Attraction will do its job and bring more things with worry and anxiety… The Universe can not show you the opportunities until you develop the thought – the vibration.

6 ½ years ago my partner unexpectedly made her transition. I was in total shock – that night I looked into the mirror and said out loud “In this pile of crap – there is a diamond and I am going to find it”

No – I wasn’t being gallant – I understood the Law of Attraction. I understood if I put myself in the victim mode – I was going to attract more discord. So I made a commitment to me ….. it was my job everyday to find a way to feel OK.

Acceptance makes Adversity Disappear…

Some may think I am saying to make believe the situation is not happening. I am not at all implying that. If you are trying to make believe something doesn’t upset you – it does still indeed upset you!

Making peace is a very different scenario — You are looking at the subject – You are accepting that this has happened – You are making the decision that you are not going to fall into the adversity trap – instead you are going to deliberately choose your thoughts.

I work with clients who hold onto grudges, disappointments, resentments for years…. All the energy that is wasted on a situation that has already happened – and never once has all that energy changed what did indeed go on.

Stepping back and declaring “What is – IS” is actually a powerful step. I can stop wasting my energy lamenting about this situation and I can direct my energy towards thoughts that make me feel better. While I can’t change a situation that has already happened – I can claim my power by deliberately choosing how I am going to react to it.

This is a step by step process – if you are in despair you are not going to jump straight up into joy. Step by step continue to deliberately choose your thoughts – thoughts that make you feel better.

You will feel your power in this process - you will gain great insight about your life – your vibration will rise and the doors of opportunity will open for you. You will soon say “Adversity? What adversity? I get to choose if a situation is a problem or an opportunity!”

Today I visited Marie Benard’s blog, Synchronicity Radio. I read her post “Law of Attraction vs. Action” I was drawn to this article immediately because of the title… I have heard other’s express LOA versus Action.

Marie asks some excellent questions about the Law of Attraction – Action – Doing – Being –

There seems to be a huge misunderstanding about the Law of Attraction- so instead of leaving a very, very long comment at Marie’s blog – I came here to sort this all out.

I hear these misconceptions about the Law of Attraction quite often.

Marie says – “…..all you have to do is get feeling good and sit on your butt and things will come knocking on your door.”

She is far from the first person I have heard express this idea. Rightly so – she is frustrated. I have to wonder – Who is teaching this stuff?!

I’m not sure if any person is actually teaching LOA in this manner as much as it is our own old stories that are being mixed in with the teachings.

I know from my client’s and my own experience we have a lot of beliefs around success in life – business – money….

Here are just a few of the things we have been taught:

• Work Hard
• Sacrifice
• You have to do things you don’t like to do
• You have to be competitive
• You have to get there first – before someone else gets it

Then we read a book or see a movie like The Secret and we hear someone say – We can Be, Do or Have anything we want with little effort. Whoa – that blows our beliefs, our old stories, right out of the water!

I think our brains react like a pinball machine on Tilt

We hear -  “little effort” – To many of our brains that means – I don’t have to do those things I don’t like to do – which then turns into – that means “No Action”

See the tilt here - many times we equate the word “action” – with things we don’t like to do. The concept of “little effort” totally goes against those old stories of what we have been taught on how to be successful.

If you are equating the word “Action” with the meaning of “Doing things you don’t like to do”….. Then, I too, would be telling you the Law of Attraction teaches you “No Action”

Stay with me here…..

If you are like me – You do not like to get up very early in the morning… And for those of you who are happy early risers – I’ll take this a step further – I think I can safely say – none of us would love the idea of getting up early in the morning with only 2 hours sleep…..

So the alarm goes off after those 2 hours of sleep – you barely reach over – turn it off and barely get your body up out of that bed… This is an Action – that you do not like to do….

Let’s change the scenario just a little bit – Same 2 hours of sleep – but on this day when the alarm goes off it is waking you to begin your 2 week cruise on the Mediterranean or whatever your perfect vacation would be! – While you might reach over just as slowly – you then realize – Oh today I am going on my fabulous vacation – and you are up and gathering your items and raring to go! You are excited about your day – This is Inspired Action!

Same action – one was motivated – one was inspired…  What is the difference?

Lets say in the first scene – it was a work day and you even might like your job – but this isn’t what you would choose to do on only 2 hours of sleep. Yet… you know you can’t call in sick on that day and you want the full paycheck at the end of the week – So you are motivated to take that action of getting up.

Second scenario – You are excited about this day. You have high expectations of having a fantastic vacation. You are eager for this experience – hence you are Inspired to get up and begin this day!

Scene one – You are Doing – Your Being is not very excited – You are not lined up with feeling good.

Scene Two – You are BEING first – which then produces the Doing – the Inspired Action.

Both actions worked – they got you out of bed… But the motivated action carries a heavier vibration – where the inspired action carries a happy, light vibration – Which signal would you want to be sending out?

I know what you are saying… Duh – Ellie – of course I am Being excited about this fabulous vacation and not being so excited about going to my job…

What if you could be so excited about your life that all your actions would be inspired? What would your life look like?

Most people’s brains will go back to that old idea of – Well in order for that to happen I have to Do the things I don’t like in order to Have the things I want in order to Be happy. That is the equation most of us have been taught and it is an underlying belief in our thought systems.

How has it been working out for you?

While it has worked for some – I know from my own and others experience – that system of Do – Be – Have does not always work. I will go as far to say – it rarely works! I certainly have followed that system – did not get the results I was looking for and then ended up feeling like a failure.

When I finally understood the Law of Attraction that failure made perfect sense to me! Here I was following a system that really did not sit well with me. What kind of vibration am I putting out by doing that? What kind of signal am I sending out – believing I have to do things I don’t like to do in order to get things I like!

The Law of Attraction does not say “Don’t take Action”….

None of us came to this highly physical and interactive society to just sit on a rock — We came into this physical experience to be involved in life – to get our hands into the clay and mold our own unique sculptures.

Truthfully sitting on a rock – making a wish and have it appear – while it might sound lovely at first – I do believe life would be extremely boring!

The Law of Attraction says first line up with your desires – First BE – Be Happy – Be Success. Be aware of the abundance around you – Be aware of the exciting journey of life – Be aware of your power.

And… as You Be the Magnificent Creator that you are – You will find yourself doing inspired action. You will find yourself lining up with all the desires you hold in life – You will find yourself not feeling dragged down by things but instead uplifted by thoughts you deliberately choose.

Everything is energy vibrating at different levels. When you are Being Happy – you are emitting a vibration – Law of Attraction can only bring to you what you are sending out.

You could line up with going to work on 2 hours of sleep – even if the initial action was unpleasant – you are still able to turn it around as your day goes on. The Law of Attraction is always about – what signal are you sending out to the Universe? If you stay angry, upset all day because you went to work on 2 hours sleep – you are going to attract to you angry, upsetting situations.

At any point of your day -

• You can turn your attention to things that please you.
• You can make peace with a yucky situation.
• You can run thoughts that your business isn’t working – or you can run thoughts that you are lining up with this business working.

You always (all ways) get to choose…..

Wouldn’t it be nice if….  or Won’t it be nice when….

These are processes that Abraham recommends to visualize what you are desiring.

This process Does Not Work for Me!

The minute I think “Wouldn’t it be nice if… my committee members kick right in rather vehemently and scream “Well it Ain’t!”

Ouch!         That does not feel good!

OK I’ll try in the other way “Won’t it be nice when….” – “When! When! When!”

Phew! OK I get it – this process does not work for me!

Find What Works For You

Abraham gives lots of processes to help you change your vibrations. (Their book – Ask and It Is Given explains these processes). And they say find and use the processes that works for you.

Through my personal experience and working with clients – I have fine-tuned some of these processes and created some of my own.

Each person is unique – each perspective is unique… What works for one does not mean it will work for another. If it did – we could all stop talking about this and many other things – as we would already have all the answers.

This diverse world is filled with as many different perspectives as it is with people! That is what makes this journey filled with the adventure it presents to us!

And… because something worked for you 2 years ago – does not mean it will work for you today. We are ever changing – ever expanding. I absolutely see things different today – than even just 1 year ago – maybe even 1 day ago!

No One Has Your Answers….

…. Only You Do!

I know there are people out there telling you what you should do…. Therapists who tell you “this is what works”…. coaches, counselors, websites, etc…. spurting they have The Secret that will work for you! Follow this plan and you will receive all these benefits ______ (fill in the blank)

I’m not knocking all these people – as there truly are some Fantastic therapists, coaches, counselors, etc…. with Fabulous messages!

But if someone tells you they have your answers, they have the magic formula that you need to follow….. RUN!

The first thing I tell all my clients, workshop & teleseminar participants is “I Do Not Have YOUR Answers” …. And I tell my coaching clients “I Do Not Want to be Your Coach!” -

That is true – I don’t want people to depend on me… I want to guide people to their own inner voice, to their own intuition. When you tap into your own internal, universal guidance system – you have then tapped into the Best Coach for You!

How to find what works for you….

Try the process, formula, etc… and then FEEL.

If it feels good to you – then it is good for you!

This is where we can get off track – We read or hear about a process – we do it – it doesn’t feel good – then we say “I must be doing something wrong” NO that isn’t it – That process does not resonate with you and that is AOK!

Remember – You are a Unique Being….

When I came upon my internal conflict with the “Wouldn’t it be nice” process – I did not freak out – I did not beat myself up… I thought it was good that I was aware enough of my own guidance that I knew…. stay away from this one – this one doesn’t work for you Ellie….

I can visualize – I can daydream and see myself in the middle of those desires I am wanting… I just can’t use that phrase! Actually I use a NLP technique that I write about in my new book “Tell A New Story – Change You Life” – (yes that ebook will be out soon)

FEEL… FEEL… FEEL…

Be aware of how you feel… feel & think – think & feel. The more you are aware of what feels good to you – the more you are tapping into your own guidance system.

Try the process and then be aware of how you feel – You will then be able to fine-tune what works for you. Stop looking outside of you for your answers – they lie within you.

If a coach, counselor, therapist, book is guiding you to understand how you can tap into the power of you – then you are on the right track… And you will know if you are on the right track by how you FEEL about it! 

You are a Unique, Power-filled, Magnificent Creator…

Your Inner Voice is the Best Coach for You!

• Are you making a list of resolutions for 2009?
• Deciding what you did “right” and what you did “wrong” in 2008?
• Planning it all out with dates and deadlines?

How does that Feel?

You say – I feel like I am assessing my life and setting it on the right path…

That is not a feeling – that is a thought…

What is the feeling behind the thought?

Does it Feel Good – I mean really, really Good? Or does it feel at bit uneasy – a bit uncomfortable or maybe even lots uncomfortable?

If it really feels good – then go ahead and continue what you are doing… but my guess is most of you don’t feel all that good about this process. Many of you are definitely uncomfortable with the resolution process.

Why?

Well how many times have you made resolutions – put a date on them – and get to that date or even to the end of the year and find you never did accomplish this resolution?

How does that feel? It feels yucky – it feels like disappointment and sadness and frustrated….

So why do we continue this resolution process?!

Well somehow we have come to believe we need to make ourselves do these things. If we don’t we will never accomplish the things we want in life…. We believe in that statement “No Pain – No Gain” — And in essence we continue to beat ourselves up.

20+ years ago – I made a resolution and I kept it! …. And I continue to keep it every year!

What was this resolution I am able to keep year after year?

No More Resolutions!

Well Ellie – You will never get what you want from life – you are just wandering through life without a destination….

Quite the contrary… When I made my “No Resolution” resolution -

• I was able to free myself from the bondage of what other people thought was right or wrong.
• I was able to discover me and how I felt about things.
• I was able to tap into my inner guidance and follow it instead of following some resolution I made months ago that might not even apply to where I was headed at that particular moment.
• I was able to be spontaneous and was open to the Now of the moment.

I was no longer wandering through life – I now had a map and that map was my inner guidance and that is the only map any of us should ever be following!

When you understand how to utilize the Law of Attraction in your daily life -

You realize how Powerful and Magnificent you are…. You do not need to be held to certain guidelines – You do not need to be made to do things… You instead follow your inner voice and are able to line up with the passion and  inspiration that will move mountains!

Today I set intentions – I know where I want to go… and I always add “here or even better for all involved”. And I always use my Personal Assistant

I set my intention and then I keep my focus on what is good in my life – not on what isn’t working… I don’t measure – I don’t say if this was going to happen it should look like this – I keep my focus on what is good in my life… on the things I appreciate… It still doesn’t look like it is going to happen – Well I don’t see that! I see what is good in my life… on the things I appreciate…

Does that work better than resolutions?

Well – Today I am not looking back at the last year at what didn’t go right. I’m not second guessing any decisions that I made. I am not deciding this and that was a mistake… I am not feeling apprehension about making any resolutions for 2009!

I’m feeling really, really good about my life! I’m feeling full of Appreciation and Power and looking forward to another Fantastic Year! I absolutely Love my Life!

If you absolutely feel you want to make a resolution for 2009 – here is the resolution I highly recommend….

Enjoy the Journey

You are not lazy… You are not a nobody… You are a Magnificent, Powerful, Creator. Love yourself … love those around you – even if you don’t particularly like them – Love your Life – Everyday find things to appreciate – Set your intentions and then follow your Inner Guidance. You will be moved to move mountains!

What is the difference between….

a “mistake” and a “discovery”?

• When you add 2+2 and come up with the answer 5 – Is it a mistake or a discovery?

• When you head north on the highway and the destination you are going to is actually south – Is it a mistake or a discovery?

• When you put the bicycle together and there are 8 bolts left over and the chain doesn’t work – Is it a mistake or a discovery?

• When you fall in love and believe this is the relationship for the rest of your life and it lasts 4 months – Is is a mistake or a discovery?

• When Columbus set sail to Asia and ended up in the Americas – Is it a mistake or a discovery?

Now many people would tell you the first 4 situations are a mistake – but then they will say that Columbus discovered America….

Hmmm…. Why is that? – aren’t all the same – they are either all mistakes or all discoveries!

I believe they are all Discoveries!

You discover when you put 2 apples in the same basket with another 2 apples you end up with 4 apples not 5… So you have made a discovery – 2+2=4

When you head north instead of south and it takes you several more hours than planned to get to your friends house – You have indeed discovered you do not want to go that way again!! 

Christopher Columbus took a wrong turn and he discovered America!

It’s all about perception…

When you look at things through the eyes of discovery – You can see expansion, opportunities, possibilities, wonder…

When you look at the same things through the eyes of mistake – You see fault, problems, judgment, errors …..

Same situation – different perspective -

The Law of Attraction states that my life is unfolding according to my thoughts – according to my perspective…. which creates my vibration.

If I am seeing fault and errors – I am going to be vibrating fault and errors and I am going to be attracting fault and errors.

I have a choice…

I can see the situation through those eyes of mistake or I can look at things through those inquisitive eyes of Discovery!

When I made a “mistake” – it would really bother me – I would end up verbally beating myself up! When things didn’t go the way I thought they should and I labeled the situation or the other person – “mistake” – I would be agitated…. It was not pleasant – Complaining really isn’t fun!

Several years ago – I made the choice -  “There are No Mistakes….. Only Discoveries!” TM

This change of perspective has made a huge difference in my life!

It has given me a lighter perspective on life… It has taken some situations that used to be very frustrating and has turned them into possibilities! I don’t beat me up anymore…

And – Yes there are days – I make many, many, many discoveries!!   

Just by calling those days “discovery days” – I am able to laugh at situations I would not have laughed at years ago.

So… You tell me – - Did you make any mistakes today? or Did you make some Discoveries?
